Abstract

This article is focused on the theoretical and methodological justification of the systemic relationship between tourists’ psychological needs and the recreational opportunities offered by resort destinations. The aim of the study is to systematize theoretical approaches to the analysis of the psychological determinants of tourist behavior and methodological approaches to assessing the recreational potential of resort areas. The study analyzes concepts of tourist motivation, including the hierarchical model of needs, the “push-pull” theory, the theory of leisure motivation, and the cognitive-behavioral approach to tourist decision-making. Approaches to assessing recreational potential based on natural resource, historical and cultural, infrastructural, informational, and socio-economic indicators are summarized. The interrelationship between tourists’ psychological needs and destination characteristics at the macro-, meso-, and micro-levels is examined. The key psychological determinants of resort destination choice are identified: self-identity, social validation, novelty seeking, risk perception, and emotional attachment. The importance of the “flow” state, prior tourism experience, and psychographic characteristics for the formation of tourism preferences is demonstrated. This study substantiates strategic directions for optimizing tourism offerings in line with consumers’ psycho-emotional needs: psychographic segmentation, diversification of tourism products, creation emotional value, personalization of the tourism experience, development of eco-friendly products, and implementation of principles of inclusivity. The study concludes that it is advisable to systematically take into account psychological, social, economic, and environmental factors when developing resort destinations. The practical significance of the results lies in their potential application to the formulation of development strategies for tourism regions and marketing program design.
