The article addresses the current issue of the professional orientation of psychopharmacology studies in the training of future clinical psychologists. The necessity of improving the content of professional education in accordance with current trends in the development of the mental health care system, the integration of psychological care into medical practice, and the competency-based model of professional training is substantiated.
It is demonstrated that contemporary clinical psychologists perform their professional activities as members of multidisciplinary teams, interacting with psychiatrists, psychotherapists, family physicians, and other professionals, which necessitates the acquisition of systematic knowledge of psychopharmacology.
It is established that the study of psychopharmacology is not intended to prepare psychologists to prescribe pharmacological treatment but rather to develop their ability to professionally interpret the effects of psychotropic medications on patients’ mental states, psychodiagnostic assessment results, the psychotherapeutic process, and psychological support.
Particular attention is paid to competency-based, interdisciplinary, and practice-oriented approaches to teaching the discipline. The use of clinical case analysis, problem-based learning, simulation technologies, digital educational resources, and current international clinical guidelines is substantiated as an effective means of developing the professional competence of future clinical psychologists.
It is determined that the professionally oriented study of psychopharmacology contributes to the development of clinical reasoning, interprofessional communication, and an evidence-based approach to professional practice; facilitates the development of skills required for the psychological support of individuals undergoing psychopharmacotherapy; and enhances the quality of training of future professionals in the field of mental health.
Thus, the professional orientation of psychopharmacology studies constitutes an important pedagogical condition for developing the professional competence of future clinical psychologists, fostering their clinical reasoning, professional responsibility, interprofessional communication skills, and readiness to provide psychological support to patients in accordance with contemporary principles of evidence-based psychology and evidence-based medicine.
