Abstract

The article presents a retrospective analysis of the evolution of perspectives on stuttering in the Ukrainian scientific and educational context, tracing the transition from early somatic, religious, and mechanistic interpretations to contemporary neurodevelopmental, multifactorial, and person-centred approaches. The study examines the major stages in the changing understanding of the nature, mechanisms, manifestations, and therapeutic management of stuttering. Particular attention is given to the gradual expansion of the professional perspective: from an emphasis on anatomical and motor characteristics and the elimination of speech symptoms to consideration of psychological, communicative, and social factors, individual developmental trajectories, and quality of life. The study employs theoretical methods, including analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, bibliographic and systematic-structural approaches, to examine Ukrainian and international speech-language pathology, psychological, pedagogical, and neuropsychological sources. The findings demonstrate that the historical development of stuttering research represents a gradual shift from the search for a single cause and the normalization of speech fluency toward an understanding of stuttering as a complex, dynamic phenomenon shaped by interactions among multiple systems. The article substantiates the need to integrate the Ukrainian tradition of speech-language pathology with contemporary evidence-based models. Future directions include multidimensional assessment, evidence-based early intervention, interdisciplinary collaboration, systematic family and educational support, psychological assistance, and greater involvement of people who stutter in the development of services and research. Particular emphasis is placed on evaluating not only speech fluency but also communicative freedom, social participation, autonomy, and quality of life.
