The article provides a theoretical synthesis of approaches regarding stress in adulthood as a multi-level process of personal adaptation that is realized through the interaction of internal regulatory mechanisms and external environmental demands. The types and semantic load of the structural components of stress in adulthood are substantiated, and cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social components are distinguished. The theoretical analysis employs the methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, and generalization of scholarly sources that elucidate the phenomenon of stress and the mechanisms of coping with it in adulthood. It is shown that the cognitive component ensures the appraisal of event significance, the interpretation of threat and situational controllability, and serves as a determinant of subsequent reactions. The emotional component reflects the intensity and duration of subjective tension and performs a signaling function regarding the state of resources. The behavioral component represents coping strategies and concrete actions through which tension is transformed into ways of overcoming or avoiding stressors. The social component highlights the importance of human support, interpersonal ties, and role demands as factors that modify vulnerability to stress and the effectiveness of coping. It is argued that a structural analysis of stress in adulthood is productive for differentiated psychodiagnostics and the selection of targeted interventions.
